2025s Cate Curran (goalie) and Ainsley Jakaboski (runner) pave the way in Loons Box for girls! Cate and Ainsley become the first girls to play for Loons Box!
“Box” is a competitive, fast, and at times hostile environment. Gameplay is initiated with contact. Moving picks, two handed jams, and shoving are typical concepts and necessary to gain positioning. Players are padded up to protect the enhanced contact. At the end of the day athletes do need to realize there is going to be a lot of contact and you need to strap up and get out there!
Cate and Ainsley entered our season and an environment dominated by male players. Their desire and interest has motivated them through learning the game, playing with pads, a new lacrosse stick, and of course dealing with the contact. We were very excited to see them suit up and get the experience of playing in their first game.
There is not a local offering and barely a national offering for girls box lacrosse. That should not hold us, or our girls back! We are proud of our girls in their efforts to help break the stigma of this being a sport only for boys. Loons girls have suited up and have tried our practices in the past. Competing in a game and entering that environment is a huge leap forward! We are excited for Ainsley and Cate, and we welcome others to follow in their footsteps!
